All About HSA

Human Serum Albumin, or HSA, is a naturally occurring protein in the human body. Its primary function in the body is to act as a carrier for fatty acids, hormones, and steroids, but it also plays an important role in stabilizing extracellular fluid volume.
HSA is used to help treat serious burns, hemorrhaging shock, ascites caused by cirrhosis, and many other serious conditions. But it isn’t limited strictly to medical procedures. HSA has many important uses in other related fields.
In the lab, HSA can perform many different tasks, making it a versatile tool for pharmaceutical, medical, and biochemical labs to have on hand. Because serum albumin carries and delivers important nutrients to the cells, it is widely used for cell cultures or in regenerative medicine.
Its binding properties allow it to bind to toxins, helping to avoid toxic effects, and it can also bind to excessive proteins. HSA can even be used to bind to hormones and growth peptides to keep them stable, or to free radicals that would otherwise harm cells. That kind of versatility makes serum albumin essential when it comes to cell culture growth and experimentation.
At Boval, we’ve long been known as experts when it comes to Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA), but we added the production of HSA in 2010, when we introduced an innovative new cell culture grade of HSA that can be used as an alternative to the USP therapeutic grade. It’s designed specifically for microbial and cell culture growth, and is free of animal components.
We begin the process with the standard USP therapeutic grade HSA, but we then remove the caprylate, fatty acids and other growth inhibitors required by the USP. That produces a high protein, high quality growth serum that is perfect for any cell culture or microbial growth needs.
We began producing HSA because we’re dedicated to our customers and want to make sure that we can provide them with everything they need in their lab work. Our 39 years of manufacturing experience makes us the foremost authority on serum albumin, and we want to share our knowledge and our serum albumin formulations with you.
