Thanksgiving

Giving Thanks

Posted By admin / 21st Nov, 2017

At Lifecycle Biotechnologies, in our role of providing tools and services to medical research labs health is our business. As with most things in life, it’s hard to fully appreciate something until you experience the loss – or threatened loss – of it. This seems to hold especially true when it comes to bodily health, since we tend to take feeling good for granted…until we don’t.

As the Thanksgiving season is upon us, we’ve thought a lot about the gratitude we feel for the health we normally take for granted, the gratitude we feel for those in the healthcare industry who play a part in giving us hope and relief when the unexpected guest of illness comes calling and gratitude for the part we’re privileged to play in being part of this field and those it helps.

While it’s not true that if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything (contrary to the oft-repeated notion); having your health and really reflecting on what it would mean to lose it is enough to inspire gratitude in most people. Being able to move without pain, to walk without becoming winded, to dance without quickly fatiguing, to eat without feeling nauseated, to be able to depend on your body to adapt to physical challenges rather than being broken down by them, and to have the capacity to fully recover from a simple cold or cut or broken bone is an incredible blessing.

As a complex, living, exquisitely responsive, environmentally interconnected organism, the body is a miracle of nature that has been the object of wonder and reverie for scientists, poets, and artists alike. No matter the health of the body, its mere aliveness is its own kind of mystery that continues to fascinate medical science and in this sense, we think the experience of embodiment is a gift worth feeling gratitude for.

Though it’s true that illness can teach us valuable lessons and hold opportunities for personal growth, our natural inclination and aim is to return to health. Here is where we feel gratitude for those who assist us in the quest for health, particularly when we have lost this health and may be suffering not only from bodily disease but also from anxiety about the possible duration of our illness, the nature and odds of a full recovery, and what this may mean for our quality of life.

We are grateful for the many women and men in the healthcare field who go to work each day to solve our most vexing health problems, cure our most deadly diseases, prevent the onset of illness in the first place, and deliver compassionate care to those who are suffering. We are grateful for the hope they offer and the relief they bring to patients undergoing everything from minor sickness and injuries to those suffering long-term illnesses or debilitating injuries.

Last, we’re grateful for the role we’re able to play in this quest for health. Not every company can say that they’re in the business of making a real difference for the better in people’s happiness and quality of life. At Lifecycle we’re thankful for the sense of meaning and significance our work affords us, for the opportunity to partner with others in the medical research industry and healthcare fields, and for the lives our work positively impacts.
